Dies the Fire - S.M. Stirling The premise is a little weak, I thought. This mysterious event happens that changes the laws of physics, yet there's no particular explanation for it. The novel is entirely alternate history, except for this nebulous fantasy set-up. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story immensely, felt it was well developed once I accepted the fantasy lead-in. The story had more than its share of convenient strokes-of-good-luck, but hey, you have to keep the characters alive somehow, right?
