Blue Amber (Apocalypto)

Blue Amber - L.K. Rigel I suppose I will have to resign myself to reading this story in novella-sized chunks. It's worth it though. Blue Amber is a shortish installment, spaced many years after the events of Spiderwork. I was very happy to see that there is advancement of Sky and Char's story, even if it's now a "historical" event. (Rigel is still keeping her spinning plates in the air!) New, interesting and conflicted characters appear in this 3rd book, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one. So far this series has felt a little bit like a brand new, kick-ass TV series, where the 1-hour shows have been dribbling out at 6 week intervals. C'mon! Give me the 5 hour miniseries already! Two tiny complaints:#1 - Because of the longevity of some characters, and the years-long gaps between books (in character years, not publishing years,) it would be nice to have a character glossary. Prepare to remind yourself of which characters are new, and which are from previous novellas. (I had to go back and re-read a bit - not that it was a bad thing. Heh.) #2 - Somewhere in the span of publishing, the first book in series, Space Junque was retitled as Hero Material, and given a new (romance-stylized) cover. I understand why this was done, and think it probably was a good business move, given that romance readers are the biggest category of readers/buyers. I have to admit though, I NEVER would have picked up this book if the first in series hadn't appealed to me as a sci-fi/fantasy novel under the previous title and cover. The original cover was unique and attractive, while the updated cover (though well-done,) kind of fades into the standardized obscurity of the average romance cover. This makes me a little sad. I probably should crosspost these comments on the Hero Material review, but since this is where I'm thinking these thoughts, here they are. It should be noted that these books are not pure romance novels. There is a great deal of world-building, sci-fi and fantasy, and it is done to excellent effect, even within the shorter novella format. I believe it's a bit of a mistake to pigeonhole the series as romance, as it is definitely crossover.
